Sight Word City 1st Grade

Children need to have the necessary skills and strategies to become independent readers. Teachers and parents need to be aware of the all-important instructional tools and “promising practices.” This program has been created to provide resources and materials for classroom teachers, reading specialists and parents. Sight Word City is a supplemental, instructional program that is appropriate for first graders, second language learners, and for children who are having difficulties with beginning reading. It is meant to build independence and fluency in word recognition, spelling, and writing. All the materials are reproducible and may be shared with your staff and parents. Some may be used as part of classroom centers during your language arts block.

Included for each week are six-page packets that include the following practice pages for four or five sight words: Configuration Station, What’s Missing? (cloze), Where Are the Words? (word search), Rhyme Time (cut and paste), Order in the Court (abc order), Clever Connector (opposites), Awesome Artist (illustrating sight word in context), and Score with Scrabble. As children complete these packets they gain confidence in their ability to be successful.

Colorful Word Card Sets may be duplicated to play memory games or Go Fish or to build automaticity in word recognition. Each card has a picture and a sentence with the word in context.

Color and Write booklets may be reproduced and used to build handwriting skills. The artwork matches the word cards, but they are in black and white for student coloring and completion in a literacy center. The sentence appears twice, once in a dotted letter format for tracing with space beneath for students to rewrite the sentence.

Jigsaw puzzles with pictures and sentences may be reproduced and used in a pocket chart or as a tabletop/floor activity. Labels are included for organizing puzzles for storage in large envelopes. It is suggested that the colorful puzzles and word cards be laminated for durability.

Finally, the program includes reproducible sight word readers and matching big books for shared reading for each week. Pocket chart activities for the readers help build word recognition, comprehension and sequencing skills. Individual readers should be placed in a student familiar reading boxes/basket for repeated reading and fluency.

More activities, readers and big books may be added in the future and the review materials need to be created.
